Daytrip from Tokyo: Yokohama

Japan

Yokohama is Japan's second-largest city and sits just 30 kilometers south of Tokyo, making it one of the quickest and most accessible day trips from the capital. Despite its proximity, Yokohama has a very distinct character and atmosphere, shaped by its history as one of Japan's first ports opened to foreign trade in the 19th century. This international influence is still felt throughout the city today, most visibly in its vibrant Chinatown, which is the largest in Japan and a paradise for food lovers with hundreds of restaurants, bakeries, and street food stalls serving delicious Chinese cuisine. The city's waterfront, known as Minato Mirai, is a sleek modern district filled with impressive skyscrapers, the historic Osanbashi Pier, and the iconic Yokohama Landmark Tower, which offers panoramic views from its observation deck. The Yamashita Park stretching along the harbor is perfect for a leisurely walk, and the historic sailing ship Hikawa Maru moored alongside adds a charming touch. Sankeien Garden is another highlight, a traditional Japanese garden with historic buildings moved from across the country, offering a tranquil escape from the city energy.

Yokohama

Yokohama is ideal for those looking for a more urban and cosmopolitan experience outside of Tokyo, as well as food lovers eager to explore the Chinatown and waterfront dining scene. History enthusiasts will also appreciate the colonial-era Western-style buildings in the Yamate district. Getting there from Tokyo is extremely easy. The JR Tokaido Line or Keihin Tohoku Line from Tokyo Station gets you to Yokohama in about 30 minutes. Trains run very frequently and the journey is smooth and affordable.
