Daytrip from Lyon: Vienne and the Roman Ruins
Located just 30 kilometers south of Lyon along the Rhône River, the ancient city of Vienne is one of the best-preserved Roman towns in all of France and makes for a fantastic and easy day trip. With excellent transport links and a wealth of history, Vienne feels like stepping back in time to the days of the Roman Empire.
The crown jewel of Vienne is the Temple of Augustus and Livia, a remarkably well-preserved Roman temple dating back to the 1st century BC. Standing proudly in the heart of the old town, it is one of the finest examples of Roman architecture outside of Italy. The Roman Theatre, carved into the hillside, is another highlight. It once seated up to 13,000 spectators and today hosts the Jazz à Vienne festival, one of the most prestigious jazz festivals in Europe, held each summer.
Beyond the Roman sites, Vienne has a lovely old town with pedestrian streets, charming cafes, and a beautiful Gothic cathedral, the Saint-Maurice Cathedral, that dominates the skyline. The city also sits at the northern edge of the Rhône wine appellation, meaning excellent local wines are easy to come by.
Getting from Lyon to Vienne could not be easier. Frequent trains depart from Lyon Perrache station and arrive in Vienne in just 20 minutes. This day trip is ideal for history buffs, architecture lovers, and anyone who enjoys combining culture with good food and wine in a relaxed, smaller French city atmosphere.
