Daytrip from Hong Kong: Sai Kung and the Geopark
ChinaSai Kung is Hong Kong's outdoor playground and one of the most scenic corners of the entire territory. Tucked away in the northeastern New Territories, this area combines a lively waterfront town with the stunning natural landscape of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, making it an ideal day trip for anyone looking to see a completely different side of the city.
Start in Sai Kung Town, a relaxed waterfront hub where fishing boats bob in the harbour and seafood restaurants line the promenade. The town also has a great Sunday market and a wonderful mix of expat and local atmosphere.
From Sai Kung Town, take a local kaito boat to reach some of the area's most spectacular beaches, such as Hap Mun Bay or Long Ke Wan, both of which are only accessible by water. For something even more dramatic, head into the Geopark to see the extraordinary hexagonal rock columns at High Island Reservoir, formed by volcanic activity over 140 million years ago. These geological formations are among the most impressive in East Asia and are largely unknown to international tourists.
Getting to Sai Kung is easy by minibus or bus from Diamond Hill MTR station.
