Daytrip from Florence: Cinque Terre

Italy

Cinque Terre is a collection of five colorful fishing villages clinging dramatically to the rugged Ligurian coastline, and despite being a longer journey from Florence, it is absolutely worth the effort for a memorable day trip. From Florence's Santa Maria Novella station, you can take a direct train to La Spezia in about 2 hours, and from there a short regional train connects you to all five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. The scenery is breathtaking, with pastel-painted houses stacked above turquoise waters, terraced vineyards, and dramatic cliff paths.

Cinque Terre

You can hike between some of the villages on the famous Sentiero Azzurro trail, take a boat between towns, or simply relax on a rocky beach with a glass of local Sciacchetrà wine. Fresh seafood and pesto pasta are absolute must-tries at any of the many restaurants along the waterfront. Cinque Terre is perfect for nature lovers, hikers, photographers, and anyone looking for a stunning coastal escape. Because of the travel time involved, it is best to start early and pick one or two villages to explore deeply rather than rushing through all five.

This day trip is especially rewarding for those who want a striking contrast to Florence's urban art scene.
